The Old Workhouse, Gayton, Norfolk
Overview: Conversion of the historic but gloomy and forboding workhouse into a light and airy family home.
Clients: private clients
Contract value: Confidential.
In converting the former Freebridge Lynn Union Workhouse at Gayton, Norfolk, we worked closely with our clients to create a bright and welcoming family home.
The original building was dark and gloomy and we invented new ways of bringing light into the interior.
A double-height central hallway provides the circulation fulcrum whilst acting as an impressive reception room with an open fireplace and heated stone floor. The accommodation wings radiate from the hallway and provide spaces for work, sleep, study, play and entertaining.
The surrounding landscape and gardens were masterplanned to relate closely to the house, its setting and its history.
