Bretts Warehouse, Great Yarmouth

Client: Great Yarmouth Borough Council

Completion: January 2009

Bretts Warehouse occupies an important corner site in the Rows in Great Yarmouth with its main frontage on the cross passage of Howard Street. Together the rows and cross passages form the essential circulation matrix of the core of the town.

The last major use of the building dates from circa.1830, the re-modelling of the late 19th century is apparent on the ground floor east entrance area. Elsewhere the facade displays the unhorned sashes, pilaster strips and Corinthian capitals typical of the late georgian period, it is grade II listed.

The site also incorporates two derelict cottages to the rear of the courtyard giving an opportunity to build new additions that will create a cohesive urban block and establish a viable new use for the buildings and land.

Jeremy Stacey Architects have been appointed to convert the building into accommodation for young homeless people. Seventeen self-contained flats will be created together training facilities, offices and a media centre.
